Author Naguib Mahfouz was selected as Focus Personality in recognition of his unique experience in the Arab literary movement, being the first Arab writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988. His works have enriched the Arabic library and the translation of his novels into most languages of the world has had a great impact in drawing international attention to Arabic novels.
The Arab Republic of Egypt.
Egypt was selected as Guest of Honour in appreciation of its unique role in Arab culture, thought, and publishing. Throughout history, Egypt has played an active role in enriching the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair with inspiring initiatives and renowned figures. Egypt is a pioneer in Arab creative work across various literary, artistic, and intellectual fields.
The goal is to shed renewed light on prominent books that have enlightened the minds of humanity with thought, literature, and sciences, and integrate them into the culture of the new generations.
"Kalila wa Dimna" is one of the most prominent works of Arabic literature, categorised by Arab critics of the past in the first tier of Arabic books. They consider it to be one of the 4 excellent books, alongside "Al-Kamil" by Al Mubarrad, "Al-Bayan wal-Tabyeen" by Al Jahiz, and "Al-Umda" by Ibn Rashiq. It is considered a great representation of the cultural cross-pollination among civilisations given its origin, which combines Indian Sanskrit, Persian Pahlavi, and Arabic, as well as its subsequent influence, which inspired the great French poet Jean de La Fontaine to produce one of his finest works of fables, and later the Prince of Poets, Ahmed Shawqi, who wove his notable collection for children from it.
The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2024 is held under the slogan "Where the World’s Tales Unfold".
The central idea of this year’s edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair is inspired by the convergence of world cultures at the Fair, which sheds light on cultures of various countries, starting with the Guest of Honour (this year, Egypt), which is participating in the Fair with a rich programme that reflects its significant cultural role in the Arab world, underlining its advanced position in the publishing industry. Furthermore, combined pavilions hosting publishers from around the world feature presentations shedding light on their respective cultures. These cultures also feature prominently in the Fair’s cultural and professional programmes, as well as in World’s Cuisine programme and the Children and Youth programme.
